Sinus Lift Surgery
This procedure is a specific variant of bone grafting that aims to restore deficient bone height in the area of your upper molars and occasionally premolars. Without this important procedure, there would be insufficient bone height to support dental implants due to an enlarged sinus.
After Surgery Instructions
Immediately after surgery, bite firmly for half an hour on the gauze placed on the wound to accelerate blood coagulation and to avoid blood oozing.
After blood has stopped, avoid chewing directly on the surgical area.
Start aplying ice packs on the cheek immediately after surgey and for 24 hours. Be careful not to place ice packs in a continuous way to avoid cold burns of the skin.
Avoid sun exposure and heat.
Avoid excessive physical activity.
Avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks, and preferably quit smoking for 6 months. Smoking increases the risk of bone graft failure.
Take the prescribed drugs as directed.
Keep on brushing your teeth normally to keep your mouth clean and reduce the risk of infection. Brush gently near the surgical site.
Start, on the first post-operative day, rinsing twice daily with the antibacterial mouthwash. Swish the solution in mouth for 1 minute then spit. Do not eat, drink or rinse your mouth for half an hour after using the mouthwash.
Do not blow your nose or sneeze holding your nose.
Flying in pressured aircraft should be avoided for 1 week.
Scuba diving must be avoided for 3 weeks.
Avoid blowing up balloons, playing musical instruments that require a blowing action or any other activity that increases nasal or oral pressure for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
We understand how important it is for our patients to be able to wear their temporary teeth as soon as possible after surgery. All removable appliances including partial dentures, flippers and full dentures must be checked for proper fit before they are worn. These appliances can transmit pressure to the bone graft site which can interfere with healing. In some cases it may be necessary to go without wearing the temporary teeth for a few days until swelling resolves and some healing takes place. In most cases, partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures should be used only for cosmetic purposes, not for chewing.
