Post-operative instructions for patients after Sinus Lift/Graft surgery
- Immediately after surgery, bite firmly for half an hour on the gauze placed on the wound to accelerate blood coagulation and to avoid blood oozing.
- After blood has stopped, avoid chewing directly on the surgical area.
- Start aplying ice packs on the cheek immediately after surgery and for 24 hours. Be careful not to place ice packs in a continuous way to avoid cold burns of the skin.
- Take the prescribed drugs as directed.
- Start, on the first post-operative day, rinsing twice daily with the antibacterial mouthwash. Swish the solution in mouth for 1 minute then spit. Do not eat, drink or rinse your mouth for half an hour after using the mouthwash.
- Keep on brushing your teeth normally to keep your mouth clean and reduce the risk of infection. Brush gently near the surgical site.
- Avoid sun exposure and heat.
- Avoid excessive physical activity.
- Strictly avoid any form of smoking, including electronic cigarettes and vaping, for 2 weeks. Smoking increases the risk of bone graft failure.
- Do not blow your nose or sneeze holding your nose.
- Avoid taking the plane for 1 week.
- Avoid Scuba diving for 3 weeks.
- Avoid blowing up balloons, playing musical instruments that require a blowing action or any other activity that increases nasal or oral pressure for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
- Wear your removable temporary appliance only as directed. In most cases, partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures should be used only for esthetic purposes, not for chewing.
